Background to Yoga
Yoga originated in India thousands of years ago. It is one of the oldest systems of self development in the world, encompassing body, mind and spirit.
The word Yoga comes from the Sanskrit word “Yuj” which means to unite. Initially that union is between the mind and the body. The body is here in the present but more often than not the mind is either dwelling on the past or anticipating the future. Yoga brings the mind and the body into the present moment through focusing attention on the detail of the posture or upon the breath.
Men and Women of all ages can practice yoga. You do not need special equipment or clothes, just a small amount of space and a strong desire for a healthier more fulfilled life.
The yoga postures or Asanas exercise every part of your body, most notable the muscular skeletal system, increasing strength and flexibility stretching and toning the muscles and joints, the spine and the entire skeletal system. They work not only on the body’s frame but on the internal organs and nerves as well, helping to keep your whole system in radiant health.
By realising physical and mental tension, yoga practice can also liberate vast resources of energy, which is then made available to us in our daily lives.
The Yogic breathing exercises known as Pranayama revitalises the body and help to quieten the mind, leaving you feeling calm and refreshed, while the practice of meditation can give clarity, mental power and concentration.
Yoga in your daily life
Many people are first drawn to Yoga as a way of keeping their bodies fit, strong and supple.
Others may come seeking help or relief from a specific complaint such as backache.
Some are merely impelled by a sense that they are not getting as much out of life as they could be. Whatever your reason, Yoga can be an instrument for you, giving you both what you came for and more.
To understand what Yoga is all about you need to experience it for yourself. Initially it may seem to be a series of physical postures, which keep the body strong and flexible.
In time anyone who continues with regular practice can become aware of subtle changes in their approach to life, through toning and relaxing the body and stilling the mind, you can begin to glimpse a state of inner peace. It is this that constitutes the essence of Yoga.
